Nofollow and Dofollow Links – The Myth | Nofollow and Dofollow Links - The Myth
The general consensus is that a nofollow link is useless – for a backlink to count it has to be a dofollow, Google doesn’t count nofollow links in its search engine ranking algorithms blah blah blah.
Well they’re wrong! Don’t discount the nofollow link just yet!
First off – what is a nofollow link? It’s simply HTML code which tells a search engine ‘hey, this is a link but don’t give the linking website any kudos for it, or attribute towards it’s pagerank’. In a nutshell that’s what it is. A lot of sites make links that can be left by its visitors ALL nofollow. That way they think that spammers won’t bother leaving spammy comments or messages with links because the links won’t count.
HOWEVER! Google does recognize nofollow backlinks and whilst they may not carry as much weight as a dofollow, they indeed count. In fact it is completely natural for a website to have a mixture of dofollow and nofollow links. If a site only has dofollow won’t the big G find that a bit strange? Well I can tell you from experience of operating many sites and trying every technique in the book, my sites that had a mixture of do and no follow links performed better on Google Ranking than those sites which I had manually added only nofollows.
So, to wrap up you need both – Don’t discard the poor nofollow!
